Here are several tips to get your New Year’s resolution off on the right foot.
Tip 1: Ensure Your Goal is Measurable
The most essential thing when creating your resolution is developing goals that can actually be measured. “I want to lose weight” or “I want to write more” are hard to quantify. However, “I want to lose 20 pounds” or “I want to write a 200-page novel” are goals you can realistically work towards and track. This is the first big step to setting yourself up for success.
Tip 2: Give Yourself a Timeline for Your Goal
While it seems logical to make your deadline the end of the year, this can make it easier to procrastinate. Instead, think about making progress throughout the year. Try to give your larger goals smaller benchmarks, and work towards your goal throughout the year.
Tip 3: Start When You're Ready
While it might be tempting to kick start your resolution on January 1st, the only person you are competing against is yourself. Start your resolutions when it’s right for you.
Tip 4: Track Your Progress
Working on resolutions can be a long process. Some days it’ll be hard to stay on track. Monitoring your progress is a great way to chart your journey and may provide just the motivation you need to keep going.
Tip 5: Expect Obstacles
While it’s not fun to think about, life happens. Things can and will get in the way of your progress. It doesn’t feel great. This can not (and should not) be the thing that stops your resolution. Remember that one bad day does not equal one lousy year.
One Last Tip
Throughout your New Year’s resolution journey, it’s important to keep in mind that you’re doing this for yourself. So on occasion, give yourself a break. Be kind and understanding. Remember, this is your journey, and it doesn’t need to look any particular way. It just needs to work for you.
