Ditch Your Old Deodorant and Make the Switch to Natural

First, let’s be clear that sweating is a normal bodily function – we all do it. But sweat + skin can = stink. As a result, putting on deodorant is a part of most people’s daily routine. Deodorant can help cut down on odor and keep your underarms dry. But have you ever stopped to think about what kind of ingredients are in your drugstore deodorant? Probably not! Some store bought deodorants can contain harmful chemicals that are known to cause skin irritation and can even cause health effects. In order to make sure you aren’t exposing your body to these chemicals make the switch to a natural deodorant with clean ingredients.

Benefits of Natural Deodorant

When it comes to making the switch to natural deodorant, you should first look at your current deodorant. Turn it over and find the ingredients list – do you see any words that say parabens, phthalates, triclosan, or aluminum? If so, these are toxic chemicals that can cause harm to your skin and body.
For example, if you have existing medical problems, some traditional deodorant ingredients could be problematic. “Aluminum might be of greater concern if you have kidney problems, especially if your kidney function is about 30 percent or less,” notes Benjamin Chan, DO, a physician at Penn Family Medicine Phoenixville. “Too much aluminum in your body can cause bone diseases or dementia. Usually, excess aluminum is filtered out of your body by your kidneys. So, people with weakened kidney function can’t filter aluminum fast enough.”
We recommend you throw out this deodorant and choose a natural deodorant that works for you. There are many different benefits you will see from making the switch to a natural deodorant including:
  • The difference between antiperspirant vs. deodorant: Believe it or not – each one is made to achieve different results. If you are someone who sweats a lot, you will want to look for a natural antiperspirant to help combat excessive sweating. On the other hand, if you aren’t concerned about excessive sweating then you should look for a natural deodorant to combat smell.
  • Scent does matter: We all just want to smell fresh and clean, right? Many natural deodorants use a combination of essential oils to achieve a certain scent. However, it’s important to know whether your body might be sensitive to some of these essential oils. Read the ingredient list to know what’s inside.
  • Be careful of products that stain: Even though natural deodorants are better for you, some of the base ingredients used in these products can stain clothing. Coconut oil is a common ingredient used but it can turn white clothing yellow after some time. If you don’t want to risk staining your clothes, look for products that don’t contain coconut oil.
